Helena Farmer's Market Scholarship Application Essay

Jonah MartinI am a senior at Helena High School and will attend Carroll College this fall. If I win this scholarship, I promise to put it toward achieving academic success in college.

I worked hard in high school to achieve nationally recognized academic performance. I have taken the more demanding courses. My junior year I took 4 AP courses and an on-line course to prepare for the ACT test and college. While the workload caused my GPA to drop, I achieved the success I hoped for by scoring very high on my ACT test (34 composite, 36 math). I earned recognition including being a U.S. Presidential Scholar Program Candidate, College Board AP Scholar with Honor Award, National Forensics League Honor Award, Helena Regional Math Contest Superior Rating, lettered for Band (x3), lettered for Speech and Debate Team, and was selected for Boys State. I am well prepared for college. My grades have fully rebounded this year even though I am taking English 4 AP, Carroll Calculus and Physics.

I believe in the importance of volunteerism. Itís a great way to serve the community, meet diverse people, develop leadership skills, and learn teamwork. In the past 12 months, Iíve volunteered 180 hours on my Eagle Scout project, in Student Council, Pep Band, Helena Friendship Center and my family recycling program. My Eagle Scout project required 78 personal hours, 119 volunteersí hours, and nearly $2000 in donations to build an outdoor classroom for the Eastgate Elementary School. I look forward to continuing in community service while at Carroll.

Over the past year Iíve been heavily involved in extracurricular activities: National Honor Society, Student Council, Speech and Debate Team, Wind Symphony Band, Pep Band, and Boy Scouts. I was the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader for Troop 121. I believe if you are not involved during your high school years then you are missing out on so much.

Thank you for the opportunity to apply for this important scholarship.
